The two parts

One certificate. Two sources. Both have to agree.

Form 16 is the only common Indian tax document that's literally split between two issuers. Part A is generated by TRACES — the government's TDS reconciliation portal — from the employer's quarterly Form 24Q filings. Part B is generated by the employer (or the studio) summarising the salary breakup and Chapter VI-A deductions. The TDS figure has to match across the two; that's the reconciliation.

What the employer-generated half actually carries — line by line.

Part B is the longer of the two halves. It walks the year's compensation from gross salary down to tax paid, citing the exemptions claimed along the way. The structure is fixed by the Income Tax Department; the studio respects the format, the order, and the references. The employee uses this exact view to fill their ITR's salary schedule.

The aggregation flow

Twelve monthly cycles → four quarterly returns → one annual certificate.

Form 16 sits at the top of a three-tier aggregation pyramid. The base is twelve monthly payroll cycles — each producing a TDS deduction on the payslip. Quarterly, four months at a time aggregate into Form 24Q (the deductor's TDS return). At year-end, all four quarters consolidate into Form 16 — one certificate per employee, summarising the entire FY.

The June 15 deadline

A real-world calendar that ends with every certificate in every employee's inbox.

The Form 16 issuance window is a six-week sprint between the end of the financial year and the legal deadline of June 15. Within that window, four things have to happen in sequence: Q4 24Q gets filed, TRACES processes it, Part B is generated and reconciled, and the certificates issue. Run cleanly, the whole thing takes a single afternoon.

Form 16 reconciliation fails for a handful of recurring reasons. The studio surfaces each one with a row-level explanation before the certificate generates, so the fix is never 'why doesn't this match?' — always 'oh, that's the late 80C declaration, let me add it.'
